Why do I have to wire my new home?

Nowadays you can do everything with wireless internet, right? So why do you still need cables? A computer network still performs better with an Ethernet cable. With WiFi you can achieve a speed of 800 to 980 MB per second in the best conditions within a radius of five to ten meters. And that only without obstacles.

Wi-Fi capacity is also shared, so the speed will slow down when multiple devices are connected to the wireless network. And then there are the neighbors, who also have a WiFi network that can disrupt your connection. So be sure to consider cabling for your internet network, so that you can connect as many devices as possible with a cable.

Which cable should I choose?

That depends from person to person. Consider what you need now, but also think about what you might need in the future.

  • A 5E cable guarantees 1 Gbps over 100 meters.
  • A 6 cable guarantees 10 Gbps over 40 meters.
  • A 6A cable guarantees 10Gbps over 100 meters.

Of course you pay more for the cables of category 6 and 6A, but they are a good investment. In principle, the internet traffic in your house will only increase. In this way you are already prepared for it!

How many network boxes do I need and where should they end?

Modern buildings usually have a technical room. It houses the fuse box, the fiber from Proximus and the provided network cables. Those cables have to end where the fiber arrives. The number of sockets again depends on what you need yourself.

In any case, we recommend that you install at least two sockets instead of the modem. And it is also a good idea to provide sockets in all rooms where devices with a network connection may come in the future. Think of a decoder, a printer, a WiFi access point, a smart TV, and so on.

Where do you place your b-box?

With a classic installation you would install your b-box in the technical room. However, this is not ideal for the performance of your telecom, as the WiFi connection in other rooms can be limited. A smart alternative is to place your b-box in the room where you most often need internet. Then you want to be as close to the decoder as possible. Usually this will be the living room.

Thanks to the double cabling between the living room and the technical room, you can connect the switch to operate the fixed devices in other rooms. Preferably place your modem in an open space, and not in a cupboard, with the indicator lights facing forwards and preferably at a height of more than one meter.

What is a switch for?

You can best compare such a switch with an electrical power strip, but then for network plugs. Depending on your needs, you can find switches with 4, 8, 24 or even more ports in specialized stores. Everything is possible!
